The Historical Society of St. Catharines was founded in 1927 and maintains its mission to increase the knowledge and appreciation of the history of St. Catharines and its vicinity. We meet formally nine times a year plus gather together for special events and excursions.

Next Museum Lecture

FEBRUARY 26, 2026: “Following the Trail of Harriet Tubman” — Douglas Mitchell, great-great nephew of Harriet Tubman, will share the scope and nature of what has become an epic, multi-year research odyssey for him, along with some of the more interesting details of Tubman’s life and legacy, including unexpected research findings and challenging experiences.
MARCH 26, 2026: “The Survival of “The Wilderness” in Old Town Niagara” — Dr. Richard Merritt discusses the rich history of a late 18th century home in Niagara-on-the-Lake that is currently being restored.
APRIL 30, 2026: HSSC Board member Dan Sundy recounts the history of the Dalhousie Yacht Club.
MAY 28, 2026: Western University doctoral student Emma MacDonald gives the history of two totem poles that once stood in prominent locations in this city, along with the broader meaning of such symbols in aboriginal culture.
JUNE 25, 2026: Historian Nancy Cameron discusses the birth of Port Dalhousie and the opening of the First Welland Canal

Annual membership is $15 for an individual and $20 for a family – good from January 1 to December 31. The cost of a printed Newsletter membership has increased effective Jan 1 2026 to $25 for single and $30 for family.
